GLORY!

This week it's going to be in the mid-upper 70's! This weather is the biggest mood-booster EVER. If you need me, you'll find me and Ruby out and about, walking around downtown, having the time of our lives soaking up the sun!

Oh, Motherhood

Since having Ruby, I have become a FREAK about germs.
Just the word germs...yuck.

I'm not talking regular people caution towards germs, I'm telling you, I PANIC when anyone touches Ruby's
hands
face
mouth
neck/head
(Mainly the first 3)

But, I KNOW, I can't shield her from everything, nor do I want to make people feel like I don't like them because I won't let them stick their fingers in Ruby's mouth/rub her hands. But if that's means for qualifying if I'm nice or like you...then that's sad.
I'm telling you, a Momma Bear spirit has risen up in me where I could care less about people's feelings (something Kevin is leery about) and my greatest concern is my daughter's safety. She got sick at such a young age (3 or 4 days old) and 4 weeks later is STILL not breathing well at night when she's laid down because of it. And that just set something off in me that has made me do whatever it takes to protect her.

But it's very hard, I mean, how do you ask sweet Great Aunt Hazel "please don't do that to my baby" when she's just trying to love on her? IT IS VERY AWKWARD!
It just seems like common sense, to me, but not to everyone else, I'm learning.

I suppose this is one of the many new things I will have to face, being a Mommy. I'm going to have to get downright openly honest with people. My heart is in love, but I'm afraid I don't always come across that way.

I'm a first-time Mom, give me a break!

We are loving all of Ruby's expressions and hilarious faces as she learns to use different muscles and is figuring things out. She is such a joy...

Super Mom!

Well...not quite. But still! I have Ruby down for a nap, the baby monitor hooked to my jeans, cleaning the toilet and sink (with my aforementioned new love, vinegar + water) and then it dawned on me:
"I am such a Mom!"

I LOVE THAT!

I am falling in love with these two products. I have done some research (yes, Shannon, I have been reading up on something!) and am LOVING all the things these two can do. Especially in the cleaning/laundering/sanitizing department. Last night I wiped our counters down with a vinegar + water mixture and it felt amazing. To be actually sanitizing and cleaning something but with a natural, poison-free product that's perfectly safe for my family to breathe in.
And the smell? Well, sure, it's vinegar. But it goes away in like 3 seconds and you would never know! I can't wait to use this stuff everywhere!!

Thursday, March 25, 2010

As of right now, I do not believe spoiling an infant is possible. I say "as of right now" because I am humble enough to say that for me, parenting is all learn-as-you-go and as soon as you are so SURE of something, it changes. And you need to be flexible if you're going to be a good parent, in my opinion. Steady on and sure, but flexible. A hard balance to find, apart from the Spirit.

So here I am, awake at 3:25am, rocking my sweet baby girl back to sleep. Some would argue that this is dangerous, that I am training her that all she has to do is cry, Mom will come pick her up and soothe her back to sleep. And you know what? That's exactly what I'm showing her. I want her to know that she is in a safe place. That come hell or high water, my parents are always, ALWAYS there for me. This will create a more independent child later on, who knows who she is and can be confident in that, because her base foundation was a nurtured one.

So here's to however long this season in our life is...I gladly take it on with joy, and know that greatness is on the other side of it all.

Well I have found the most beautiful woman on the planet. In my humble opinion. Kevin and I have just started watching LOST (seriously, we're on Season 1) and every time we watch it I have decided to do at least 3 sets of 15 bicep curls in honor of Evangeline's arms.

See you soon, awesome arms.
Goodbye, bingo flaps.

Sugar, Ahhh Honey Honey

I have a problem:
I cannot stop eating sugar!!!
I crave it like I did when I was pregnant.
And my sorry attempts to find ways to trick my body into getting something sweet, like having an apple or decaf sweet tea
just
doesn't
cut
it

I want carbohydrate-filled SUGAR. Do you think it's because my body is lacking sugar, that's why I'm craving it so much? Or is it more likely that because I have been eating such bad sugars, that my body is wanting more and more of it?
Please help!

A special thank you to my sister, Shannon, for introducing me to this wrap and encouraging me in all things natural parenting.

Saturday Morning

Our favorite morning of all seven mornings because Daddy gets to sleep in with us. I will always treasure these precious times when our little Ruby comes into bed with us on her last stretch of the night, and we get to wake up to her, happy as can be, cuddled up with her Mommy and Daddy.

Friday, March 19, 2010

Yay! It's Friday!

A very cute outfit of Ruby's...although I'm not sure she's enjoying this photo shoot

We are slowly starting to get the hang of this sling. Come to find out, she is too big for the infant position that most almost 3 week olds fit right in. So...we'll see. I used to think the Moby wrap was weird, but I've got my foot in my mouth now, because I think we may get one of those if this bad boy doesn't work out.
Tonight we got to go out to eat!! It was a HUGE deal for us because it was our first time to bring Ruby out in public! And we were blessed by Kevin's grandparents, who gave us money to go out to eat for our anniversary (3 years...I love you honey!)

Ruby did SO good, she slept the entire time! We were so proud of her!

feeling so much better...

I got to clean!! I cleaned out the fridge and it feels and felt FANTASTIC!
No, this is not a Great Value advertisement, it's just the Kiehn house.

Everyone told us how beautiful it was outside today so Ruby girl and I went on our first walk! Which lasted about 6 minutes and included some tears. She is still stuffy and gets frusterated when she can't breathe well. I'm the same way, Ruby.
(poor Clarence and Albert, they used to be the ones we walked! Your turn will come, guys...)

All in all, she loves her carseat and loves to be moving, so a walk is right up her alley. We will go on so many walks she won't know what hit her. Can't wait for spring and summer!

ODE TO MY HUSBAND

Daddy is the greatest man on earth.
Me and Miss Ruby have been sick lately, and while she's gotten to sleep (as much as possible with a stuffy nose and congested chest), Mommy hasn't. Yesterday was really hard because I came to a breaking point where I started feeling really sick, and Kevin could see that because I wasn't getting any real sleep, I wasn't healing. So, he called into work, changed his schedule and responsibilities at church (hard for him to do, he is very responsible!) and stayed home with me. We called his mom and she came over and helped. Kevin made me go lay down in bed, gave me a back rub to help me sleep, and I was out. When I woke up 3 hours later, groceries were bought, some laundry was done, and the house was all picked up.
AND I GOT TO SLEEP!!
He stayed up all night with Ruby, feeding her with the breastmilk I've been pumping and storing. I didn't have to get up to feed her but one time, and that was because I was hurting and NEEDED to!
Ruby won't remember these days, the days that her and her daddy got to bond at such a young age, but the foundation is set and it means the world to me. That I'm married to a man that loves to be a good husband, loves to be a good father, and puts everyone before himself.
Kevin, I bless you, Mighty Man, for always taking care of us:)

I am realling looking forward to getting back on my feet and feeling normal again! I can't wait to have the energy and everything to...

Clean My House
Go On Walks With Ruby Girl
Go Grocery Shopping
Run Errands
Cook Dinner and Surprise Kevin With A Homemade Cake
Organize and Clean Things!

These days Ruby and I are trying to get the hang of our SlingEZee sling. It's much harder than it looks! The poor girl looks scrunched up in there and kind of like "Mom...what are we doing?" But I am bound and determined to get it because it is WONDERFUL. So convenient for Mom, comforting for baby (once I get the positions and fitting right!) and EXTRA PERK: no strangers are going bother/touch her when she's in that. So, privacy and less germs!

Friday, March 12, 2010

Week 2 of our new lives
has brought the first of many things!
We are loving finding a routine and getting to know each other better and better.
Everyone told me how bonding nursing is, and is really truly is.
There's something indescribable about it.
It is such a blessing, all of it.
She is too cute!
I hate that her neck isn't straight in this thing but she doesn't seem to mind!
First bath... She wasn't loving it. But as soon as we wrapped her up in her little towel and held her, all was right in her world. (See first picture of post:))

Her first manicure! Too many Moms have told me stories of cutting their baby's fingers while trimming nails, and Ruby has been scratching her little face too much lately. So we file, and it works great! She doesn't seem to mind, either!
Today, PRAISE YOU YAHWEH!!!!, is the first day that I have felt better. I can actually get up and walk around! Some circumstances have prevented me from healing as quickly as I had hopeed, but I purposed to remain high spirited and thankful, and I am now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel! Hallelujah!!

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Here's a picture of our sweet girl from last Friday I believe. Since we've had her, I've become overwhelmingly protective. I have changed the settings to any and all online accounts that have pictures of her and or our family because of this. It just doesn't settle with me knowing that anybody can find out all this information about us and her (totally my fault. I share way too much) So with this route, I surely won't be getting tons of feedback, but the people that I know, love, and trust, will be the only ones laying eyes on her and I am MUCH more comfortable with that.
She is doing GREAT. Unfortunately we both caught a pretty yucky cold. My sweet 11 day old is stuffy nosed and phlegmy throat and doesn't know how to cough or anything yet:( Hurts this Momma's heart. On the plus side, hopefully this is teaching her immune system to fight stuff off and toughen her up a little bit. Either way...hard to watch your brand new baby struggle.
I am still healing. I'm surprised on how long it's taken. I thought for some reason I'd be back to normal by now, but I need to chill and realize I pushed an 8 lb. 6 oz. baby out my my body and big surprise, it needs time to recover! So I've been having LOTS of bedtime.
I'll keep you posted!

Would love to tell all about the birth story and how everything is going (awesome, by the way) but we are so tired and just got home today and adjusting so it'll be a little while till I can get time dedicated to doing that.
I've got better things to do for now:)
