This post is a questionnaire for all of you who know how to cook (that's you, Christina Larsen)

I am new to this. I have been down this road many times and I always end up frustrated.
I find recipes, I buys groceries, and they always go bad before I ever use them, wasting tons and tons of money.

I am no longer in a place to waste money (who is?) so I have got to get better at this.

My questions are:
1) How do you know what to keep in your house at all times? (I mean, beyond chicken...)

2) How do you keep those food from going bad so quickly? (i.e. when you buy tomatoes, avacadoes, lettuce, you have to use it soon or it gets bad fast)

3) How do you keep things in your house to cook, have ALL the ingredients you need for an average recipe, and not end up going to the store 4 times a week?!

4) Is it possible to cook a meal 6 days of the week, and do it all for $100 a week in groceries? Or am I kidding myself?

5) So let's say I can put together a recipe and I did well...NOW what do I do for side dishes?! (easy ones)

Please help. I want to be good at cooking, I want to provide great nutrients for my family, and I want to save money while doing it. I KNOW it's possible!!

I made a mistake today and ate...A LOT...at this place

Absolutely disgraceful.

Every time I go there I think to myself
"this is disgusting, I'm never coming back here"
SO WHY???

WHY???

Do I find myself there again?!
Poor Ruby is in crammed quarters as it already is, she didn't need a buffet's worth of yucky pizza and desserts to take up more of her room.
I'm sorry, body.
I'm sorry, Ruby.
I'm sorry, metabolism.

{ but moving on!!! }
THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE!
It's been a beautiful one so far, Kevin and I are about to watch a movie and snuggle on the couch for a little while. Sitting back and enjoying our beautiful, blessed lives.

I have come to realize that our house doesn't stay clean long because of.....

*drum roll please...*

OUR PUPPIES!!

They track in leaves, those pokey balls from trees, Albert potties on the wood floor, Clarence licks in the same spot on the couch for about 150 licks, they are always getting their toys out of their basket and leaving them all around the house.

But how, oh how, can you say no to this?

Obviously, Kevin can't.

How DARLING are these pillows?!
After, or possibly while, I conquer learning (and loving) to cook, I want to learn to sew

A) pillows
B) curtains
C) skirts for Ruby
If I can't do C, I will be satisfied with A and B.
Today I am doing nothing with the nursery and focusing on my house. It's a MESS! I have to move a lot slower these days and bending over is well, a rarity, and takes about 30 full seconds seach time, but I CAN DO IT!

My plan is to be in the rest today, spiritually and physically. No worries, no stressing about this
or that, no mind wandering that leads to nothing positive, just REST. Rest in my Father, REST in His Word to me. And right now, His Word to me is that I am to be a stay at home Mom, and
finances and schedules and clients are not mine to worry about. He will take care of that all.

I REST IN YOU, FATHER.

YAY!!!
Ruby's crib bedding is DONE!!
I added the pink polka dot fabric strips today, what do you think?
This is how it is without the bows. I like the simplicity and cleanliness of it, but the polka dot ties are just too cute, in my opinion.

I am washing all her wittle clothes and blankets today and just oooing and ahhing over everything. I mean, can baby things GET any sweeter?!

So many good things are happening in the Kiehn household!!

Our friend Jessica finished Ruby's bedding and it's BEAUTIFUL! I have to wash her crib sheets first, and then I will post pictures!

I love when Kevin gets in his "To-Do" modes, because he came home from work, ate some lunch, and then started installing our ceiling fan in the living room! A great thanks and shout out to my Momma, who gave that fan to us. It's going to be beautiful!

Albert actually didn't potty in his kennel last night! *Can you hear the angelic choirs singing praise?!* We have been working on that little squirt for oh, you know, a year and a half now. HE WILL GET IT!!!

Kevin and I have purposed to make this last month together before Ruby gets here our best one yet. Lots of dates, lots of just laying there and talking, lots of just the two-of-us togetherness. It will never be JUST us again:( It's so crazy to think of! I know I have never met Ruby or any of our children yet, but i KNOW that I know, I will always put Kevin first and quite frankly love him more. But the time is right and purposed for the season of JUST us to come to an end soon, and to start the new season in our lives of CHILDREN!! and then grandchildren....oh my. I have got to learn how to cook!

So what do you think?...

My sweet Nanny got me a wipes warmer for Ruby and I am a little torn. I love the idea and I love that it will be so much more comfortable for Ruby

BUT

I don't want her to get used to knowing "Oh, wipes are warm and great" at home, and then when we take her anywhere else and change her diaper, it's a shocking, cold, wet, miserable surprise!

So, keep the warmer and risk that?
Or trade it out for, of course, diapers and other needed things, and she can just know from the start that wipes are cold?

{p.s. I would like to say Thank You Nanny, for the gift of course! This doesn't mean I don't love it! I am just trying to be practical here! :) }

Clarence Faithful Kiehn
Today is our sweet Clarence's birthday. He was born 3 years ago today. We got him 2 weeks after we got married and we both will say that it was one of the best things we've ever done in our lives. His middle name is Faithful for a good reason. If you are brushing your teeth, he is there at your feet. If you get up from the couch to go do something in the other room, he comes with you for support. He spends most of his time looking out the window for bad guys and will alarm us if one comes within a 100 yard radius of our home. His favorite things include brushing his teeth (dental bones), Praising the Lord (a trick he knows, he puts his front paws up and jumps around) and teaching his little brother Albert to be calm.
Clarence, we love you so much. You have enriched our lives greatly:)
RUBY'S SHOWER!!
Given to us by my very best childhood friend, Miss Christina Carnes and her family Look at this fruit platter! My goodness!

Holy Moly! We are so blessed. That giraffe is SO CUTE! Ruby is going to love that, I just know it.

Nancy (Chrstina's grandma) and Nanny (my Grandma) working hard on getting the food table ready. Thank you everyone for helping!

Kevin and I are very torn about something.

When we bought the house that we live in, it came with a cat, Sammy. The previous owners tried taking her (an outside cat, even thought the DECLAWED HER! isn't that awful?!) to their new home and land, but she hated it and refused. So... she came along with the territory.

Our next door neighbor always kept food on her back porch for her and let her in when it was freezing cold. Well... our neighbor just moved.

And now Sammy is outside our house crying and meowing and runs in front of our car every time we pull up to the house begging for attention and food.

We are on a very tight budget these days and quite frankly don't need to be spending the extra money it would take to feed her. And we're not HUGE cat people, honestly. But if she dies BECAUSE OF US, I don't know what I'd do. Gosh, I don't know what Kevin would do, he loves animals more than probably any man you've met!

So what do we do?! Create a monster by feeding her and making her think she's ours, signing up for years and years of adding "cat food" to our Walmart list, or don't feed her and risk HER DEATH?!

This is the love of my life right now. Every day I just keep filling up my favorite big plastic cup with cold water and
CRUSHED ICE!!!!! Everytime I fill my cup up I think "oh blades, you are so good and sharp. Thank you! Please never dull." If I could go in there and sharpen them, lube them up, whatever it takes to keep them working so beautifully I would. I love you, crushed ice.

my spirit is FULL

Last night was awesome. I am so, so thankful for the people we are joined to in our ecclesia (church) for so many reasons. The Holy Spirit spoke to me SO much on so many different things last night. The whole premise of last night was our role as wives. All the women met together and all the men met together, and spoke on different things. It was AWESOME.

One of the many many revelations I walked away with last night was the fact that we, as wives, set the tone for our house. Ultimately, you bet, our husbands are the head, the authority, the final say. But we are their partners, and we can't expect them to have all of those responsibilities, PLUS everything at home.

When your husband comes home from work, you have 2 choices: to either dump everything that's been bugging you all day on top of his already full plate, going on and on about how the kids weren't good today, or this or that....OR, you can greet him with an encouraging word, a kiss, and an offer to take some of that weight off of his shoulders.

In doing this, we set ourselves in a place to be blessed in return! A relationship where both people are laying down their lives for the other is the most beautiful thing. THAT'S where the perfect blend of "oh my gosh, he's my best friend AND i am so, so in love with him" comes in! It's wonderful!! Thank you, Father, for the way you set things up. I JOYFULLY line up with Your order... there is always greatness on the other side of obedience!

Today we went to Compton Gardens in Downtown Bentonville to see the progress on Crystal Bridges. Clarence and Albert are LOVING me being home because of events like this. The walking trail there is BEAUTIFUL. We love love LOVE living in downtown, with all the character and fun things like this to do. Yahweh is so good. On the Overlook Deck. It's crazy what all they can do! Thank you, Alice Walton for bringing something so cool to our town. Actually, while I'm at it, thank you Waltons, in general, for making this town, period!
While I'm thanking things and people, thank you to my best friend, Kevin, for always wanting to bless me. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!

I am looking forward to the day that I...

...no longer have to rub cream on my big belly and chest every night

...can sneeze or cough without pottying my pants

...can drop a pen and actually bend over and pick it up

...can stand for more that 15 minutes at a time

...don't have the heartburn of an overweight man

But I so, so, and even greater so, love...

...this big ole round belly that moves and squirms

...telling Ruby what we're doing that day, since we go EVERYWHERE together

...the politeness of the general public when they see just how pregnant I am

...the soft blankets, tiny slippers, and stuffed animals in preperation for her

...when Kevin and I lay in bed, put our hands on my belly and feel Ruby move and groove

This is the best thing I've ever done in my life. It's all so worth it.
Ruby's Baby Shower!
Given to me by my dear friend Leslie McDaniel!
Leslie and I. We met in beauty school 7 years ago this month! We have been through weddings, jobs, babies being born, and lots and LOTS of laughter.
One of my favorite gifts! Leslie HANDPAINTED this for Ruby's room. How cute is this?!

33 weeks today!

Another dear friend of mine is throwing me a shower next week along with all of our family and church friends! Kevin and I are so blessed and amazed with Yahweh's provision, His faithfulness to His sons, and the amazing people He has put in our lives. I'll post pictures of that shower, too!

HEE HEE HO

I would just like to say:
Staying home and choosing to rest has been THE BEST decision we have ever made. Other than, of course, choosing to marry each other, receiving Christ to habitate our lives, etc. YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!
What an awesome few weeks this has been. Remember when I at first felt weird and wasn't so sure about this schedule? UM HELLO!? it's FABULOUS!!
Tomorrow, Saturday, Kevin and I have a birthing class from 8am-5pm at the hospital. Can you believe how long it is?! I have no idea what to expect, but I am very excited. For those of you that know me, I am a bit of a question asker, so hopefully the other moms and instructor don't hate me by the end of the day. And if they do? So be it:)
WE ARE 32 WEEKS AND 3 DAYS PREGNANT...GETTING THERE!!

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

TODAY HAS BEEN AWESOME! I got to go to a Children's Consignment store with my dear friend Leslie. I will have to do a tribute to that woman on here...She CRACKS ME UP! To any of you who are past/current clients of mine, she is the dark haired little Asian hottie that worked next to me for years and we spent most of our days entertaining clients. She is throwing me our shower next Sunday!! I CAN'T WAIT! I daydream and night dream about it all the time. I will post pics as soon as I can after it's happened!

Here is a picture of the fabric of the bedskirt Ruby's crib will have. To be honest, her room is a "see as we go" type of decor!

In the true spirit of me getting the hang of blogging and this website...these pictures are all backwards. I meant to make them in the opposite order, but lesson learned for next time! This is what we have SO FAR for our little Ruby's room. It used to be a really bold green color, which people seemed to love, but I never really did. LOVE this sweet, soft color for a nursery. Can't wait to get all of her stuff and decorate it all the way. I'll keep you all posted!
A picture of Kevin the day he was born in an Illinois hospital that his mom gave me this year at Christmas. I just threw it in there for now because I don't know where to put it. It's HILARIOUS he looks like a little old granny. Don't worry folks, he turned out VERY handsome:)

This is one of my most recent pics. 7 months and 1 week here, I do believe. This is a genuine smile because this is the day that my man finished painting the room and I could go in and just revel in the big step towards her room being done!

Here he is working hard on it! So excited!

Staying At Home

Well I have TECHNICALLY been home for 2, going on 3 workdays. This is a whole new world for me. I have learned that I am most certainly a person of structure and order. Not bogged down, or in bondage to anything, but I just like order. So after a day of doing hardly anything at all I realized...

"ok this isn't going to work."

My whole reasoning for taking maternity leave early was because I need to REST. I was pushing myself too hard physically at work and it was taking it's toll on me and our baby. Also, you all can please be praying for this: I have a "vericose vein" (I hate to call it that, it sounds so bad) that is excruciatingly painful to stand on, and it's in a lovely area, very low, under my belly if you know what I mean:/ So standing on that causes great pressure on that vein and needless to say I can't stand for long periods of time.

However, I can't sit for long periods of time because I'm just thinking the whole time "there are things to be done!"

SO

I have started making to-do lists, even for staying at home.
Even if it's for simple, obvious things that don't need to be written like "pick up the house".
EVEN if it's "brush your teeth"
I will rest well, knowing that what I set out to accomplish, has been done.

:)

A Stroll Down Memory Lane

I can't believe i was ever this small and pregnant! At this point, we had known for about a week. How sweet and exciting!!

July 2009

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

I am trying to learn to upload pictures on this website! It won't let me do any of the recent ones I've uploaded:( Just ones that have already been on my computer. I would, however, like to point out the wonders of a tan. Our nurse practioner told us that it was fine to go tanning while pregnant. Uh...no ma'am. Not fine, if you ask me. I mean, good heavens! I know it's fairly arrogant to have a large picture of myself plastered across this website but I'm telling you, it won't let me upload the ones I want to! I will have to wait until tomorrow when my man's awake and can help me. Until then...here's a huge me.

The First of Many

Well I can't believe I'm blogging. But here it goes.
I have officially passed the "must check Facebook everyday" phase of my life, so we created this to still keep up with close friends and family without the dramatic status changes, relationship woes, and unnecessary clubbing pictures that Facebook comes with. I will gladly take advantage of the day and age we live in and use the technology we have to keep up with loved ones. And what better way than a website like this?!

As most of you know, I am 7 1/2 months pregnant with our first baby, a sweet little girl, that we have named Ruby James Kiehn. James, after her Daddy's middle name. I have a feeling Kevin and her are going to be VERY close. I recently left my job of doing hair for nearly 7 years, and I stay at home now. I CAN'T BELIEVE I'm actually getting to say that, but I am! The change is temporary, and as far as our natural eyes can see, I will be going back to work in June 2010. But who know? Our Father, of course. And He will most certainly reveal to us what we are to do. Let's just say I'm not going to put a cap on anything, and give Him free reign to do whatever in our lives. So...stay at home, or back to work...we'll see. Until then, I am going to enjoy EVERY MINUTE of this season in our lives of where we are now.

I will keep you updated on my pregnancy, Kevin's part in all of that, and of course, Ruby herself.

So here's to a new phase in our life: Staying at home, the house actually staying clean, resting (yes, I am taking NAPS these days!) budgeting and finding new ways to save money, preparing for a baby and soon HAVING one, pressing into the things of the Spirit like we never have before, learning to cook (it's about time) and of course..."blogging" to our dear loved ones.
